The American Jazz Museum and The Blue Room mourn the passing of Joan Green, a cherished member of our community whose warmth, laughter, and steadfast dedication graced the Blue Room for more than a decade.
For over 11 years, Joan was the welcoming face at the front door of The Blue Room — greeting every guest with kindness and care, and making sure everyone who entered felt like family. Her genuine hospitality and radiant smile became as much a part of the Blue Room experience as the music itself.
“Though small in stature, Joan carried a presence that filled every room — a big-hearted spirit fueled by kindness, solutions, and an unwavering love for people,” said Gerald Dunn, Director of Entertainment at The Blue Room. “She never met a stranger, always ready to go the extra mile for every patron and always brought that special sparkle we all needed to make the night complete.”
Andre Tyler, Blue Room Manager, shared: “Joan has welcomed guests at the front door of The Blue Room for more than 11 years. Those who entered our doors could always count on a friendly greeting from Joan. As a staff member, you would always know that Joan was looking out for her co-workers — who she referred to as family. She was always the life of the party and will be deeply missed. I know Joan realized that The Blue Room guests and staff loved her. May she rest in peace.”
Her joyful energy and unwavering spirit inspired those around her. As KaSandra Jordan fondly recalled, “God don’t put that dollar in your hand if you can’t let that fifty cents go!” — a reflection of Joan's generosity and wisdom that will stay with all who knew her.
Joan’s contributions helped shape the heart of the American Jazz Museum and the enduring spirit of Kansas City’s jazz legacy. Whether she was welcoming guests, sharing stories, or lighting up the room with her laughter, Joan created a sense of belonging that will never be forgotten.
We extend our deepest condolences to Joan’s family and loved ones. May her memory continue to inspire the joy, creativity, and community she brought to all of us.
