KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Oct. 6, 2025) — The American Jazz Museum (AJM) announced today that a distinguished ensemble of Kansas City jazz musicians, Bobby Watson, Charles Williams, and James & Jaylen Ward, will travel to China to participate in the Edgar Snow International Symposium, taking place Oct. 10–17th in Beijing, Zhengzhou, and Shanghai.

With funding awarded by the American Jazz Museum, the artists will represent Kansas City’s storied jazz tradition on an international stage. Throughout the weeklong symposium, the musicians will perform and engage in dialogues and cultural exchanges that spotlight the improvisational spirit and collaborative values that define Kansas City jazz.

“Kansas City jazz has always been a bridge by connecting people, ideas, and cultures,” said Jill Johnson, interim executive director of the American Jazz Museum. “We’re proud to support these exceptional artists as they share our city’s sound with audiences across China at the Edgar Snow International Symposium.”

About the Artists

Bobby Watson — Celebrated saxophonist, bandleader, and composer with deep Kansas City roots and international acclaim.

Charles Williams — Veteran pianist, bandleader, and cornerstone of the Kansas City jazz community.

James & Jaylen Ward — Acclaimed Kansas City father-son rhythm section known for versatility and dynamic collaboration.

Cultural Exchange & Impact

The Edgar Snow International Symposium convenes scholars, artists, and civic leaders to deepen people-to-people ties between the United States and China. By featuring live jazz—America’s original art form—the program underscores the role of music in fostering dialogue, creativity, and understanding.
